State Department Updates Visa Bond Requirements for Travelers

U.S. Department of State "visa bond" requirements may affect visitors from certain countries.

On January 8, 2026, the U.S. Department of State announced an update to the visa bond requirements for certain countries. Nationals from these countries may need to post a “visa bond” when applying for a B-1/B-2 tourist/visitor visa.

This could affect:

  • Family attending Stanford events (e.g., commencement)
  • Visitors for academic/professional activities (e.g., conferences, guest lectures)
  • Participants in short-term non-credit programs or summer enrichments

The Department of State has identified nationals from these specific nations as needing visa bonds. Bond amounts may be set at $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, determined during the visa interview. Planning ahead is crucial for those who may need to apply for a U.S. B-1/B-2 visa, as applicants might be subject to this new Visa Bond Pilot Program.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • The bond pilot program is effective from August 20, 2025, through August 5, 2026, for designated countries.
  • Bond amounts will be decided at the visa interview.
  • The bond is refundable if the visa holder departs the U.S. by the expiration date or does not use the visa.
  • Travelers must enter/exit through specific ports of entry, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Please inform family and friends planning short-term visits to the U.S. on a B-1/B-2 visa of these changes. If you have any questions, please contact the Bechtel International Center.
