Stanford joined with universities, businesses and research organizations in a lawsuit challenging U.S. Department of Labor and Department of Homeland Security rules that would make drastic changes to the H-1B visa program.

Stanford will strongly oppose a proposed federal rule that would have wide-ranging effects on international students and scholars who hold F or J visas.

In an email to the campus community, President Marc Tessier-Lavigne discusses the federal government’s decision to rescind its July 6 guidance requiring nonimmigrant students who are not taking in-person classes in fall 2020 to leave the United States.

Stanford joined 19 other colleges and universities in the western United States in a lawsuit challenging a new federal directive affecting international students, and also joined 58 other universities in a separate legal filing supporting another challenge to the federal directive.

In a message to the university community, President Marc Tessier-Lavigne discusses Stanford’s opposition to a new federal rule affecting international students this fall. The president wrote to the Department of Homeland Security urging the department to rescind the announcement, and Stanford will join an amicus brief challenging the new rule in court.
